1st Visit ~ What to Expect

On your first visit for therapeutic massage, please arrive 10 minutes early. Make sure you are properly hydrated, drink adequate amounts of water the day prior to and the day of your appointment.    I will have a brief client history form for you to complete prior to your massage.  My home office is located on the second floor, you must be able to easily climb stairs.

I will sit down with you for a private consultation to establish your goals and discuss any current health conditions.  With excellence, each session is uniquely customized to meet your specific needs using multiple therapies.   My hands and intuition are my eyes. They will guide me to your areas of concern.  Your massage experience will be specific, client based, informative, therapeutic, and will be performed with the highest ethical standards.

Where Will My Massage or Bodywork Session Take Place?
Your massage session will take place in a warm, comfortable room (image 2).  You will lie on a heated massage table especially designed for your comfort.  Soft music will be played in surround sound.   I offer a variety of music, from Classical to Tibetian Crystal Bowls.

Must I Be Completely Undressed?
I will encourage you to undress to your level of comfort.  Most massage and bodywork techniques are traditionally performed with the client unclothed;  however, it is entirely up to you what you want to wear. Remember, you will be properly draped during the entire session. I will also ask that you remove all of your jewelry.

Will the Massage Therapist Be Present When I Disrobe? 
No, I will leave the room and go downstairs to give my hands a good washing.   You will have ample time to relax onto the table, and cover yourself with clean sheets and a warm blanket. I will ask permission prior to entering the room.

Will I Be Covered During the Session?
You will be properly draped at all times to keep you warm and comfortable.  Only the area being worked on will be undraped.

What Parts of My Body Will Be Massaged?

You and I will discuss the desired outcome of your session.  This will determine which parts of your body require massage.  A typical full body session will include work on your back, arms, legs,  feet, hands, head, neck, and shoulders.

What if I'm overweight or embarrassed about my body?
You wouldn't believe how many times I've heard someone say they'd get a massage if they lost weight first or didn't have that cellulite on the back of their thighs.  Don't let this stop you. You're denying yourself quite a pleasurable experience. I have seen bodies in every imaginable shape and size, from young to old.  I am not here to judge your physique or ogle your body.

I am a professional who has found massage to be a wonderful gift to give to men and women alike, regardless of age and weight.  I am proud of what I offer to my clients in need of help or just wanting  to luxuriate in the sense of a caring and therapeutic touch.

What Will the Massage or Bodywork Feel Like?
This depends on the techniques used for your session.  I use several different techniques. In a general Swedish massage, your session may start with broad, flowing strokes that will help calm your nervous system and relax exterior muscle tension.  As your body becomes relaxed, pressure will gradually be increased to relax specific areas and relieve areas of muscular tension.

I use Jojoba oil scented with therapeutic grade Lavender and Peppermint Essential Oils to allow your muscles to be massaged without causing excessive friction to the skin. The oil also helps hydrate your skin. You should communicate immediately if you feel any discomfort so that another approach may be taken. Massage and bodywork are most effective when your body is not resisting or guarding.

Are There Different Kinds of Massage and Bodywork?
There are numerous types of massage and bodywork; various techniques utilize different strokes, including basic rubbing strokes, rocking movement, posture and movement re-education, application of pressure to specific points, and more.  I like to inform the client of different techniques I am performing throughout their massage and encourage feedback.

How Long Will the Session Last?
The average full-body massage or bodywork session lasts approximately one hour. A half-hour appointment only allows time for a partial massage session, such as neck and shoulders, back or legs and feet. Many people prefer a 60 or 90 minute sessions for optimal relaxation. Always allow relaxation time prior to and after the session. Hot tubs, steam baths and saunas can assist in the relaxation process.

What Should I Do During the Massage or Bodywork Session?
Make yourself comfortable. During your massage, I will gently move you or tell you what is needed throughout the session (such as lifting your arm). Many people just close their eyes and completely relax. Others like to talk during their session. I do encourage feedback during your massage, if it feels good, please speak up and if my pressure brings discomfort, please let me know immediately.  Feel free to ask me questions about massage and bodywork in general or about the particular technique you are receiving.

How Will I Feel After the Massage or Bodywork Session?
Most people feel very relaxed. Some experience freedom from long-term aches and pains developed from tension or repetitive activity. After an initial period of feeling slowed down, people often experience increased energy, heightened awareness, and greater productivity which can last for days. Since toxins are released from your soft tissues during a massage, it is recommended you drink plenty of water following your massage.  It is also very important to be hydrated prior to your massage.  Drinking water is best for your body!

What Are the Benefits of Massage and Bodywork?
Massage and bodywork can help release chronic muscular tension and pain, improve circulation, increase joint flexibility, reduce mental and physical fatigue and stress, promote faster healing of injured muscular tissue, improve posture, and reduce blood pressure. Massage and bodywork is also known to promote better sleep, improve concentration, reduce anxiety and create an overall sense of well-being. Many of my regular clients have expressed a boost to their immune system, and thanksful the cold and flu season passed them by this year.

Are There Any Medical Conditions That Would Make Massage or Bodywork Inadvisable?

Yes. That's why it's imperative that, before you begin your session we will discuss your current health status.  It is very important that you inform me of any health problems and/or medications you are currently taking.  If you are under a doctor's care, it is strongly advised that you consult with your physician about receiving massage or bodywork. Certain medical conditions will require written recommendation or approval from your doctor.
